The Sharpener Who Saved the Day

Green Appleton held its second Repair Cafe on 8th Feb 2025, in the village hall. It was a great day, and around 100 people came to bring things for repair, or just to see what was going on, and sample the excellent cake supplied by our volunteers.

We offered repairs to garments, small electricals, jewelry, and most importantly, a sharpening service.

One of the hardest things we have found in organising these events is getting the repairers sorted out. People get ill, or other commitments appear, and they drop out. This time, the biggest challenge was handed to us when our sharpener decided we had too much paperwork and meetings, and droppped out at four days notice.

Panic! But an SOS email to Abingdon Carbon Cutters yeilded a shout-out to their bank of sharpeners, and Dr. Rob said he would come along and sharpen for us. PHEW! This was a really good thing as we had a huge demand for the service, and Rob was kept busy the whole time. We reckon he sharpened a massive 75 items - so an enormous thank you goes out to Dr. Rob, and we hope he comes back to us next time!
